Eric Linquist's Spartan, New Armor

Description

This is my rendition of Eric Linquist's (:iconangel-ink:) character Spartan/Achillax Theron, an ancient Greek warrior from Sparta brought to the modern era by an evil sorcerer's magic. In his time, Achillax was one of the greatest warriors alive, and now in the early 21st Century, he seeks to show he is still that...when he's not busy trying to remember a computer and a fist do not mix.

For my rendition, I wanted to give Spartan a new look, because I thought if this man's a Spartan warrior of old, his armor should say that.

Spartan's original armor had three colors: Black, red, and silver. I decided to add gold as a nod to the fact that hoplite armors were made with bronze.

To that end, I based his armor on the armor of the hoplites, citizen-soldiers of Ancient Greece. The design on Spartan's new chestplate is a nod to the fact that among hoplite breastplates, it was popular to have them be molded to resemble a muscular chest.

I decided to add scale mail over the arms because I thought it give Spartan additional protection, and as Spartan learned more about the warriors that came after him, he'd see the value of armoring up his arms. A light layer of scale mail will give him protection and mobility. I agonized over what color to make the scale mail, but in the end, I decided on gold.

I also did a slight tweak to his helmet as well. In the world of the ANGEL Corps, Spartan's helmet is enchanted, allowing him to see in all directions easily. I tweaked the helmet's design to more resemble a Corinthian helmet, a design that was popular amongst Grecian warriors of Achillax's era, and again, as a stylistic nod to his Ancient Spartan origins.

I kept his original boots because I liked them. I imagined they'd have built-in greaves.

I drew this armor with my favorite technical pencil, inked with Sakura Micron pen, and colored in Crayola marker. For the gold and silver parts, I used a gold and silver marker I obtained at the pharmacy. They are great, and look beautiful on paper, but the thing is, I always have to re-draw my inked lines because I tend to slightly go outside them with these things on occasion, and they cover black ink lines.

I hope you like it!
