Description

This here is my attempt to color in a picture that was drawn by one of my favorite artists, :iconjoe-singleton:. It was a commission he did that had the DC Comics villain team Crime Syndicate of America facing off against Marvel Comics superhero team, the U-Foes.

For those who aren't in the know, the Crime Syndicate originally appeared in Justice League of America #29 (August 1964). From the parallel world of Earth-Three, the Crime Syndicate were basically evil versions of the Justice League, who used their powers to wreak havoc. They came to battle the League when Ultraman discovered the existence of the worlds of the Justice League and Justice Society.

Over the years, as the DC Universe got revamped, so did the CSA, from Qwardian counterparts of the JLI to Earth-Three natives again.

Despite the many changes to the team as a concept, the Crime Syndicate has generally been a Five Man Band: Ultraman (counterpart to Superman, he used Kryptonite to maintain and increase his powers), Superwoman (counterpart to Wonder Woman, who also has heat vision (post-Silver Age) and has a lasso that releases inhibitions), Owlman (counterpart to Batman who enhanced his mind with drugs), Johnny Quick (counterpart to the Flash, but not as fast as him), and Power Ring (counterpart to Green Lantern, his ring was from a monk named Volthoom who inhabits his mind).

The U-Foes first appeared in Incredible Hulk #254 (December 1980). Led by the power-craving politician and businessman Simon Utrecht, the U-Foes were a group of people who imitated the Fantastic Four's exposure to cosmic rays, not realizing they would expose themselves to a ray concentration that would've killed them.

Bruce Banner would save them, but they attacked him out of anger of his interfereing with their launch. They battled the Hulk, but in the end, their inability to control their powers did them in. However, they would return, get control, and fight other heroes, including the West Coast Avengers. Interestingly, to my knowledge, they never battled the Fantastic Four. The U-Foes consist of:

Simon Utrecht (Vector) - The leader of the U-Foes, Vector gained telekinesis thanks to the cosmic rays, but he can only attract or repel matter. He once was able to flay all of Hulk's skin off (Incredible Hulk #398 (October 1992)).

Ann Darnell (Vapor) - The life-support engineer of the ship the got her exposed, she gained the power to transform into any gas. She can turn human again, but only for brief periods.

Jimmy Darnell (X-Ray) - The fuel-propulsion systems engineer of the U-Foes' flight, he's the younger brother of Vapor. He was transformed into a being of solid energy, and can emit various forms of radiation. He can force the Hulk to change back into Bruce Banner by using "negative" gamma rays.

Michael Steele (Ironclad) - The pilot of the ship, Ironclad became living metal. He's super-strong, super-durable, and able to alter his own weight, so he can become as light as a feather, or as heavy as a blue whale.

Thank Wikipedia for all that. :)

This was colored with a mixture of Crayola and Sharpie markers, as well as Crayola colored pencils. I tell you what, Vector was a nightmare to color. The man is yellow, and covered in all sorts of wild red and orange shapes, so he was tough to figure out. Ironclad was interesting, as he provided a great reason for me to use a silver colored pencil I had (I had a silver marker, but the ink in it is more like paint, and it's hard to control sometimes).

All in all, I had fun coloring this.
